St Catherine’s Primary Podcast

Hi and welcome to the St Catherine’s Primary School relief teacher podcast.
We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 8.50 and it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.10. Yes that is 8.10!

Parking and traffic in the area is a major issue in the morning, particularly after 8.20. The school is located alongside a large post-primary school so if you arrive later than 8.10 you will be unlikely to find a park in the school carpark. You must park on the internal road that runs between the two school campuses.

We highly recommend you have a good grasp of these details before you leave home to avoid all sorts of problems.
Dress code for our school is smart casual, no denim nor singlet tops.

Once you have parked make your way along the internal road to the Admin Office – look for the netball courts and the office is to the right.

The office staff will be expecting you and you will be asked to sign in.

Once you have signed in you will be greeted by Peggy Harvey, one of our Assistant Principals. Peggy will give you a brief induction as well as a CRT folder, lanyard and keys.

If this is your first visit to our school you will need to sign the school’s Child Safety Code of Conduct and a copy of your VIT card will be taken. Again you will be assisted with this.

Your CRT folder contains
• session times
• class lists
• yard duty information
• information on how to handle any emergency issues and
• network log-in details

If you are teaching any children with special needs, including those with a medical condition, you will find information on this in the CRT pack.

Attendance rolls need to be completed online by 9am and 2pm daily. If you have any issues with this please speak to Peggy or one of our helpful office staff.

More than likely a daily program will be on the teacher’s desk or handed to you on arrival. We expect you complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and current units of work.

If there is no work available, one of your colleagues will be able to help you out. And if you have any concerns about the work please speak to a colleague or Peggy.

Please correct all work and if necessary collect it for the teacher.

The photocopier is available for your use, but please speak to the office staff who will organise this for you.

Students at our school do have access to digital resources such as stand alone computers and iPads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason.

Typically the kids at St Catherine’s are well-behaved and respond very well to positive reinforcement. If any behavioural issues arise please follow the following steps –
1 – verbal warning outlining what behaviour is unacceptable and what the student should be doing
2 – ask the child to relocate to a different seat 3 – brief time out
If any serious or emergency issues arise, including serious behaviour issues, you will have access to a red card which must be sent to the office immediately. The red card is found near the external door.

If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area punctually. Peggy will assist you with the areas. A Hi Viz vest and a bumbag will be brought to your classroom if you are on first duty. If a child is injured or ill in the yard please complete the yellow form in the bumbag and send the child with two other students to sick bay.
Similarly if a child needs to go to sick bay from the classroom, please complete an exit form, found in the CRT folder and send this with the child and two others to the office. In fact, any time a child needs to leave the room they must be accompanied by two students.
Classes are dismissed at 3.15. At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher. Comments on the behaviour of individuals and/or the class may be useful.

Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

It is important you remain at school until all students have been collected by a parent or guardian, or have moved to the office. If you have any concerns please speak to a staff member. Never leave a child from your class unsupervised at the end of the day. Any children not collected or heading home by 3.30 must go to the office.

Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out on the iPad. Leave the keys, the lanyard and CRT folder at the office before you leave. If you feel any matter needs to be followed-up, please speak to Peggy. If all is OK travel home safely and we hope to see you again.
