Hillsmeade Primary

Podcast transcript

Hi and welcome to the Hillsmeade Primary School relief teacher podcast.

We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 9 so it is highly recommended you arrive before 8.45.

You are welcome to use the school’s staff car park or the car park adjoining the soccer field adjacent to the school.

The dress code is “smart business attire” although if you are teaching Physical Education or art, more appropriate dress is recommended.

Once parked head to the school office where you will be asked to sign-in. You will then be given a brief induction – staff room, toilets, areas for yard duty and the like – before being shown you to your room.

In each of the rooms you will find a CRT folder. These folders contain important information on

  • session times
  • your daily timetable including yard duty
  • children with special needs, including those with a medical condition, and
  • what to do if a student is ill or injured.

A school map is also included.

You will also find a sheet explaining classroom management practices. Make sure you read this as a priority. In each classroom the school’s Behaviour Steps Chart will be displayed. The children are familiar with these procedures so please implement them as required.

A classroom attendance roll will be there for you to complete.

This attendance roll must be marked manually by you and handed to a colleague to be entered electronically. Attendance rolls are important documents so please attend to this early as a matter of priority. Rolls need to be marked both morning and afternoon. If you have any query about this process it is important to ask when you arrive.

Any money or notes collected should also be sent to the office and noted on the class list.

We recommend you spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with these details as soon as you arrive.

Hillsmeade is a large school with over 800 students so it is important you are prepared to ask for assistance throughout the day. You will find your colleagues more than happy to help.

More than likely a daily program will be there for you to follow, please complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and their current units of work.

Please correct work and if necessary collect it for the teacher.

If there is no work available, please speak to a colleague or senior staff member who will be able to assist you.

Students at our school do have access to digital resources such as laptops and Ipads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason, nor at recess or lunch.

If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area promptly. If you are unsure where to go, make sure you ask a colleague. The office staff will provide you with all the information you require – don’t be afraid to ask.

Classes are dismissed at 3.30. Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy and all doors and windows are locked. Please turn off all computers, heaters etc. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

At the end of the day please complete a handover page. Tradewind have one available or you can simply write your own. Let the teacher know what work was covered, what needs to be followed up and how well the children worked throughout the day.

You will need to remain for at least 15 minutes at the end of the day to tidy up and write your handover notes. By this time all the students should have headed home or been picked up. If this is not the case please inform your teaching colleague or the office. Never leave the school if a child or children remain unsupervised. Make sure you let someone know.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out.

We look forward to seeing you at Hillsmeade and hope you enjoy your day with us.
