Hi and welcome to the Gilmore College for Girls relief teacher podcast.
We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!
So let’s get started!
Classes at Gilmore commence at 8.30 – yes 8.30 – so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than twenty past eight.
Traffic around the school is a significant issue most days so it is imperative you allow extra travel time. The school is right in the heart of Footscray, with busy and multi-lane roads going right by the school. So drive carefully.
The school has three car parks and we recommend you use one of these as all-day parking is difficult to find. Two of the car parks are on Malden St and the other off Barkly Place. We recommend you consult a map before you leave home so you have an idea of how to locate these streets.
The main office is on Barkly St and you will need to head there as soon as you arrive to sign in. One of the office staff will be expecting you and will direct you to our daily organiser, Maria Vendetti. Maria will have a detailed CRT pack for you, as well as a netbook. And if there is time, Maria will give you a brief look at the school.
You will find the school’s CRT pack most comprehensive. It contains information on
- Bell times
- Yard duty
- The names of senior staff
- School rules and guidelines, particularly governing the use of mobile phones
- Students with medical needs and
- How to use the netbook to mark the roll and access student work on Compass.
Make sure you look over the CRT pack as soon as you arrive. It will make your day so much easier and more enjoyable.
Maria will also give you keys for the classroom, a whiteboard marker and pen. Make sure you lock the classroom when you leave, both during and at the end of the day.
All of the day’si work will be available on the Compass program via the netbook. You will be given a username and password and if you encounter any problems, please ask a colleague or speak to Maria. Everyone at Gilmore will be happy to help.
Please implement the lessons outlined and make sure you follow-up on the students’ work. Correct it where required and if appropriate, collect it and leave it in the teacher’s pigeon hole.
Students at our school do have access to digital resources such as laptops and Ipads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason, nor at recess or lunch. Students are not permitted to use their phones at school. Relief teachers need to reinforce and model this behaviour by refraining from using phones in front of students.
You will find the students at Gilmore keen to work, helpful and enthusiastic. But, occasionally behavioural issue may arise. If this does happen we suggest you employ the following procedure.
1. Issue a cautionary warning initially informing the student what behaviour you find unacceptable, and what your expectations are
2. If the behaviour continues or deteriorates consult a colleague for further advice.
3. And finally if the behaviour escalates, you need to speak to one of our senior staff. The names of the senior staff are listed in the CRT pack.
An incident report form is also contained in the CRT pack and if a significant issue occurs please complete this and hand it to the Maria or a senior staff member.
Maria will let you know if you are on yard duty during the day. There are only two areas for duty – front and back – and these will be pointed out for you.
Classes are dismissed at 3.15 and if you are on yard duty at this time you are to supervise until 3.30.
At the end of the day please ensure the classroom is neat and tidy and all doors and windows are locked. Please turn off all lights and heaters etc. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out. Make sure you return the CRT pack and netbook to Maria. Most importantly, make sure the classroom keys are returned.
And finally, you might choose to bring your own lunch although here are plenty of options for take away close by.
We look forward to seeing you at Gilmore College and hope you enjoy your day with us.
