Coral Park Primary

Podcast transcript

Hi and welcome to the Coral Park Primary School relief teacher podcast.

We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our kids! So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 8.45 – yes 8.45 – so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than twenty past eight.

Apart from Tuesdays you are welcome to use the staff car park although there is plenty of all day parking around the school – so this should not be an issue.

Once parked, head straight for the school office, where Matt or Beck will be expecting you. Lynda is also in the office and happy to help.

Students at Coral Park address many of the teachers by their first name. Please let Matt or Beck know what your preference is as soon as you arrive.

You will find the students at Coral Park great to work but it is important you take a stern but accommodating, open and positive approach right from the start of the day. They will respond well to good communication and explanations. If you do encounter behavioural problems employ the following procedure

1 – verbal warning

2 – child’s name on the board

3 – a cross next to the name which requires a 5 minute time out. If this does happen please let Matt or Beck know.

If the behaviour continues to deteriorate you must call the office – there is a sheet by the phone with all of the contact details. Please don’t let matters escalate! Matt and Beck will be happy to assist.

A CRT folder for your grade is available on arrival, and if there is yard duty on the day, this will be explained to you. Matt and Beck will also let you know about the grade and if there are any children with special needs.

Most likely you will be working alongside another teacher in a shared classroom. It is important you arrive early so that you have time to speak with this teacher. Remember, everyone is busy first thing, so make sure you arrive in plenty of time to discuss and plan your day.

A hard copy of the day’s work should be on the teacher’s desk. If not, please inform Matt, Beck or your teaching colleague and they will print a copy for you.

Please follow the program left for you. If you are unsure about any matter, simply ask. Coral Park have a very friendly team, only too willing to help. Any work completed should be corrected and if necessary left for the teacher. At the end of the day please complete a handover page. Tradewind have one available or you can simply write your own. Let the teacher know what work was covered, what needs to be followed up and how well the children worked throughout the day. You can also speak with your teaching colleague about this as they work as a team.

In your CRT folder you will find an illustrated description of how to mark the roll. If you have any problems with this make sure you ask – your teaching colleague, Matt or Beck, or Lynda in the office.

The CRT folder will also have information on session times and a school map. Make sure you are familiar with these.

On each teacher’s desk you will find a red emergency folder. If any emergency does arise you will be guided by senior staff but make sure you know where the folder is and what information it contains.

If you are on yard duty during the day – and this is likely – you should bring along a hat, particularly in terms 1 and 4. If you forget, the school should be able to help you out. You will also be given a hi-viz vest. Matt and Beck will explain all of this to you, including the area you need to supervise.

Students at our school do have access to digital resources such as laptops and Ipads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason, nor at recess or lunch.

Classes are dismissed at 3.30.

Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy and all doors and windows are locked. Please turn off all computers, heaters etc. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

You will need to remain for at least 15 minutes at the end of the day to tidy up and write your handover notes. By this time all the students should have headed home or been picked up. If this is not the case please inform your teaching colleague, Matt, Beck or Lynda in the office. Never leave the school if a child or children remain. Make sure you let someone know.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out.

And finally, it might be best to bring your own lunch. There are limited options for take away close by.

We look forward to seeing you at Coral Park and hope you enjoy your day with us.
