Job Description
We are currently looking for an Education Specialist Support Worker with either a Social Workor Education background for a short term position providing trauma-informed education related support services to school-aged children and young people residing in the Residential Care Program
This role aims to provide support to children and young people who have become disengaged from mainstream education or experienced sustained periods of absence. Each young person receives support to develop individual, tailored and flexible educational plans that allow for difficult learning styles and academic levels. These are developed in conjunction with education and vocational providers where possible.
This is an outreach role, based in the Northern Suburbs. A fleet car will be provided, but you must hold a current drivers licence.
The role is a 4 day a week and flexibilty around the day you choose not to work, provided its not the Wednesday.
The role would suit somebody who has worked in Alternative Education whether as a School Teacher or a Social Worker. The typical age range of young people you are supporting is 12yr to 17yr.
Key Selection Criteria
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (including public speaking, presentations, reports and facilitation skills).
- Demonstrated ability to flexibly manage competing priorities and stressful situations, monitoring own stress levels and practising and promoting self-care strategies.
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of policy and practice in the education sector.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with high risk young people who have complex needs and behaviours.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in the delivery of education to young people with complex educational needs, including the implementation of Individual Learning Plans.
- Solid understanding of the impacts of trauma, abuse and neglect on a young person's capacity to engage with education.
- Skills in writing and delivering curriculum to individuals or small groups, at a range of educational levels.
- Demonstrated experience balancing realistic goal setting and high expectations of complex young people.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team and with key stakeholders particularly within school communities.
- Understanding of the interface between the education and welfare sectors.
- Strong conflict resolution skills.
