Sunshine College North

Podcast transcript

Hi and welcome to the Sunshine College North relief teacher podcast.

We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 8.40 so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.20. Ours is a busy school and you will need time to get yourself organised for the day.

Relief teachers are welcome to park on either side of the school where you will find ample parking. Please avoid parking at the front of the school where parking is limited and you may incur a parking fine.

Sunshine College North expects all staff to adopt a highly professional approach at all times. Unless you are dressed to take PE classes a smart casual or semi-professional code applies – avoid wearing denim jeans, open-toe footwear and sleeveless tops.

Once parked, head straight to the school’s reception area where you will need to sign-in and be greeted by the office administrator or the daily organiser. You will be handed a CRT pack which includes

  • a sheet outlining classes for the day,
  • classroom keys,
  • whiteboard markers,
  • a map of the school,
  • an ipad or a hard copy for marking the attendance roll,
  • guidelines for managing student behaviour and
  • information on yard duty.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these documents.

If you are required to mark the roll on the iPad you will also be given a page outlining how this is done. If you are asked to mark the roll manually, please do this at the beginning of the class and hand the hard copy to the Office Administrator.

The daily organiser will also provide physical copies of class instructions, lesson plans and resources.

Please complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the students will be familiar with the routines and their current work.

If required, the teaching notes will ask you to correct the student work.

If you have any queries or concerns throughout the day please do not hesitate to ask in order to ensure that you have all the relevant information and resources you need in order to take your classes.

If you are on yard duty you are expected to walk around and supervise students in the designated area. Please ensure students are not playing in the gym unless they are supervised by a teacher or given specific permission from a teacher to be there. In particular, teachers on yard duty are to ensure students are not polluting, leaving school property (unless they have been given specific permission to do so e.g. attending a Year 9/10 elective off-site, parental permission), or being too rough when playing games.

Students at our school have limited access to digital resources.

You are welcome to bring your own laptop, but you won’t be able to connect to the Internet via the school server. Most rooms have a TV which can be used as a projector when connected to a laptop. There are two computer rooms, as well as a number of computers in the library. The Maths room (Room D4) and a computer room (Room D2) have smartboards. Overall it is wiser when planning your day not to rely on using digital resources.

You will find students responsive to a positive, professional approach but if you do encounter any behavioural issues we recommend you follow these guidelines:

Initially provide the student with a verbal warning clearly stating what is inappropriate with his or her behaviour.

If the behaviour does not change, ask them to move to another table.

If the misbehaviour continues, inform the student that he/she will need to leave the room (choose a responsible student to escort the student to the Principal’s office).

If the student refuses to leave the room, ask a responsible student to get the student manager or Principal to come and assist the student to leave the room.

Classes finish at 3.10 most days. At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher, and also comment on the students’ engagement, work and behaviour. Please hand this to the daily organiser as you leave for the day.

Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy and if furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.
Before leaving the school, please visit the office to sign out, return the keys, your handover notes and the CRT folder. Ensure the CRT folder is intact, as this will assist the next CRT.

We look forward to seeing you at Sunshine College North and hope you enjoy your day with us.
