Strathmore North Primary

Podcast transcript

Hi and welcome to the Strathmore North Primary School relief teacher podcast.

We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 9 so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.30.

Dress code for our school is smart casual.

You are welcome to park in the staff car park located on Brosnan Street, along the creek. The car park is locked daily a little before nine so if for any reason you have to leave during the school day you will need to see the office staff to have the gates opened.

Once you have parked make your way to the Admin Office. Head past the Library and Art room, and then follow the signs onto the office. But don’t worry, if you can’t find your way the children are helpful. Simply ask for directions.

The office staff will be expecting you and you will be asked to sign in. Depending on where you are teaching you may also be given a set of keys.

As well, you will receive a CRT pack with information on

  • session times
  • your daily timetable including yard duty and
  • children with special needs, including those with a medical condition.

You will also be given information on how to mark the roll which must be done at 9 and 12 every day.

We recommend you spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with these details as soon as you arrive. If you have any concerns about any of these matters please ask.

More than likely a daily program will be on the teacher’s desk or handed to you on arrival.  Often years 3-6 teachers will provide work for students on their iPads. The students will know how to collect this. We expect you complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and current units of work.

Please correct all work and if necessary collect it for the teacher.

If there is no work available, please speak to a senior staff member who will be able to assist you.

The photocopier is available for your use. Again simply ask a senior staff member in your area for assistance.

If any of the children have notes or money for collection please do this first thing and send both the money and notes to the office before 9.30.

Across the school it is common for the students to work on ipads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason. Children in grades three to six are allowed to put their iPads in the classroom from 8.45 rather than have them in the yard.

Typically the kids at Strathmore North are well-behaved but occasionally some behavioural issue arise. Have a close look at the sheet on managing behaviour in your CRT pack and please implement these strategies as a priority. Again, if you encounter any serious problems, please ask a colleague or senior teacher for assistance.

If you are working at Strathmore North on a Monday whole school assemblies are held in the afternoons from three. Simply ask a colleague for details or the children. They will be familiar with these routines.

If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area punctually. There will be a yard duty bag and a Hi Viz vest provided for you. And remember, if a child suffers a knock to the head, no matter how slight, they must go to sick bay at the office.

At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher. Comments on the behaviour of individuals and/or the class may be useful.

Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

It is important you remain at school until all students have been collected by a parent or guardian, or have moved to after school care. If you have any concerns please speak to a staff member. Never leave a child from your class unsupervised at the end of the day. Any children not collected, not at After Care or heading home by 3.45 must go to the office.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out and hand in any keys.
