St Michaels Berwick

Podcast transcript

Hi and welcome to the St Michael’s Primary School relief teacher podcast.

We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 9 and all teachers need to be in their rooms by 8.50 so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.30.

Dress code for our school is smart casual.

Parking and traffic in the area can be tricky in the morning, particularly after 8.30 so please leave yourself plenty of time. It is best to park in Bain St on the western side of the school. Please don’t park at the front of the school as time restrictions apply and you run the risk of a parking fine.

Once you have parked make your way to the Admin Office which is on Scanlan Street. But don’t worry, if you can’t find your way the children and parents are helpful. Simply ask for directions.

The office staff will be expecting you and you will be asked to sign in.

You will also be given an Ipad and introduced to one of the two APs, Andrew or Jenny

The Ipad has all the information you require for the day including

  • session times
  • yard duty
  • information on the school and your class and
  • the children with special needs, including those with a medical condition.

You will also be given a hard copy of the roll, which needs to be marked both morning and afternoon and then sent to the office. Make sure you do this as a priority.

If any of the children have notes or money for collection please do this first thing and send both the money and notes to the office before 9.30.

The school canteen operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays so please ensure you attend to this early in the day.

More than likely a daily program will be on the teacher’s desk or handed to you on arrival.

Often years 3-6 teachers will provide work for students on their iPads. The students will know how to collect this. We expect you complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and current units of work.

If there is no work available, Andrew or Jenny will be able to help you out. And if you have any concerns about the work you will be working alongside colleagues who will be able to help.

Please correct all work and if necessary collect it for the teacher.

The photocopier is available for your use, and if you have a great memory, the code is 0777. But again simply ask a colleague in your area for assistance.

Across the school it is common for the students to work on ipads. Just remember these are for work tasks only and are not to be used for any other reason.

Typically the kids at St Michael’s are well-behaved but occasionally some behavioural issue arise. Have a close look at the sheet on managing behaviour in your CRT pack and please implement these strategies as a priority. Again, if you encounter any serious problems, please ask a colleague or senior teacher for assistance.

If you are working at St Michael’s on a Friday whole school assemblies are held in the afternoons from 2.45. On Mondays a brief flag-raising ceremony is held first thing. Simply ask Andrew, Jenny or a colleague for details or the children. They will be familiar with these routines.

If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area punctually. There will be a Hi Viz provided for you in the classroom. And remember, if a child suffers a knock to the head, no matter how slight, they must go to sick bay at the office.

Classes are dismissed at 3.30. At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher. Comments on the behaviour of individuals and/or the class may be useful.

Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

It is important you remain at school until all students have been collected by a parent or guardian, or have moved to after school care. If you have any concerns please speak to a staff member. Never leave a child from your class unsupervised at the end of the day. Any children not collected, not at After Care or heading home by 3.45 must go to the office.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out.
