Hi and welcome to the St Agatha’s Primary School relief teacher podcast.
We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!
So let’s get started!
Classes commence at 9 and all teachers need to be in their rooms by 8.45 so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.30.
Dress code for our school is smart casual, and no denim.
Parking and traffic in the area is an issue in the morning, particularly after 8.30 when Scott Street becomes one way. Yes, that is – one way. It is highly recommended you arrive before 8.30 so this is not a problem for you and use Sladen Street as the preferred entrance. You are welcome to use the onsite parking, but just make sure you give yourself plenty of time. We highly recommend you have a good grasp of these details before you leave home to avoid all sorts of problems.
Once you have parked make your way to the Admin Office which is well signed. If you are unsure the kids and families are most helpful.
The office staff will be expecting you and you will be asked to sign in using the Vpass on the counter. The office staff can assist you with this. Please identify yourself as a VISITOR when asked on the system.
If this is your first visit to our school you will need to sign the school’s Code of Conduct. Again you will be assisted with this.
Once signed in, one of the senior staff will be able to assist. You will be given a CRT pack with details including
- session times
- yard duty
- a school map
- how to handle any emergency management issues and
- information on the school and your class
If you are teaching any children with special needs, including those with a medical condition, you will find a red folder in the classroom with all the details. Please look at this as soon as you arrive in the classroom.
You will also be given a hard copy of the roll, which needs to be marked at 9.30 and 1.20 each day and then sent to the office. Make sure you do this as a priority.
If any of the children have notes or money for collection please do this first thing and send both the money and notes to the office before 9.30.
The school canteen operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays so please ensure you attend to this early in the day.
And please note – whenever students leave the classroom they must go as a group of three.
More than likely a daily program will be on the teacher’s desk or handed to you on arrival. We expect you complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and current units of work.
If there is no work available, one of the senior staff will be able to help you out. And if you have any concerns about the work you will be working alongside colleagues who will be able to help.
Please correct all work and if necessary collect it for the teacher.
The photocopier is available for your use, but please speak to the office staff who will organise this for you.
If you are new to our school you will not be required to use digital technology when working with the children so this should not be an issue.
Typically the kids at St Agatha’s are well-behaved and respond very well to positive reinforcement, and a school-wide positive behaviour program is in place. Right from the start of the day please try to form positive relationships with all students . A friendly, fair and supportive outlook works best with our kids. If any behavioural issues arise please speak to a senior staff member or colleague. And please do not speak to parents re these matters. The school will handle that.
If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area punctually. There will be a Hi Viz vest, a bumbag and phone available in the staffroom or from the person you replace on duty. The only number you need is 101 if an incident occurs. And remember, if a child suffers a knock to the head, no matter how slight, they must go to sick bay at the office.
All relief teachers are encouraged to spend lunch and recess times with the staff in the staffroom, but please note, we are keen to promote social interaction in the staffroom so please refrain from using your phones. Have a chat and relax.
Classes are dismissed at 3.30. At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher. Comments on the behaviour of individuals and/or the class may be useful.
Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy. If furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.
At the end of the day all students can only leave if
- collected by a parent, guardian or sibling or
- if they have a walker’s pass
Any child not collected by 3.45 must go to the office.
It is important you remain at school until all students have been collected by a parent or guardian, or have moved to the office. If you have any concerns please speak to a staff member. Never leave a child from your class unsupervised at the end of the day. Any children not collected or heading home by 3.45 must go to the office.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out and to sign the Tradewind register.
