Hi and welcome to the Deer Park North Primary School relief teacher podcast.
We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students.
So let’s get started!
Classes commence at 8.50 so it is highly recommended you arrive no later than 8.30. Smart casual is the dress code for our school.
Relief teachers are welcome to park in the staff car park on Gould Street or in the surrounding streets. But please be aware, parking restrictions do apply in some streets. It is best you arrive early and use the staff car park.
Once you arrive head to the main office. If this is your first visit to our school you will need to spend a few minutes with our office administrator Michelle to run through our OH and S guidelines.
You will then be introduced to our Assistant Principal who will
- help you sign in,
- give you a copy of our CRT Folder,
- explain the day’s schedule and
- take you to the classroom.
Our CRT Folder has information on the school’s daily timetable. Please be aware of these times and procedures as they are somewhat different to what you may encounter elsewhere. You will also find information on students with special needs and administrative procedures. Please spend a short time familiarizing yourself with these guidelines.
More than likely you will be introduced to the team leader who will be able to assist you throughout the day. All of our teams plan collaboratively so there will be plenty of support for you. Please, don’t be afraid to ask.
A hard copy of the attendance roll will be in a blue folder. Please make sure you mark this before 9.30 and again after lunch. You must then send the completed roll to the office. If you are unsure about these requirements please ask Michelle in the office. Attendance rolls are important documents and must be completed accurately.
Children commence each day with a short reading session from 8.50 – 9.00 so be prepared to implement this program and settle the children as soon as they arrive. Throughout the day please follow the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and current units of work.
Correct all work given and if necessary collect it for the teacher.
Students at our school may have access to digital technology resources. Just be aware that these resources are for class work only and are not to be used for any other purpose. You are required to monitor their use of this technology and all devices must be accounted for in the class log, put on to charge and locked within the appropriate storage trolley.
Typically the children at Deer Park North are well-behaved but of course from time to time issues arise.
Our school follows a School-wide Positive Behaviours model.
Expected Behaviours are consistent across the school. These are documented in the CRT folder. Classroom agreements should be on display in the classroom and referred to regularly. These are built around our school values:
-Be Empathetic -Be Your Best -Be Resilient
Our classroom management procedures are simple and straightforward so please implement them as follows:
1 Provide the student with a reminder of the expected behaviour 2 Move the student away from the group for a short period
3 Have the student re-enter the group
4 Move to another classroom if the behaviour continues.
If any serious misbehaviour occurs please contact your team leader or the school office (Internal phone 201)
If you are on yard duty please move to the designated area as soon as possible. Staff have 15 minute yard duty sessions
All staff must wear a high visibility vest, a wide brimmed hat in terms 1 & 4, and carry a yard duty folder to document any incident that requires follow up. Children who are hurt during recess are sent in to first aid/sick bay by the yard duty teacher.
The teacher on yard duty in first half of a recess break must remain in the designated area until released. If a teacher does not come to release you please send a student in to the office to request the staff member.
If you encounter any serious matters in the yard (behaviour and/or accident) – send a red card (in yard duty folder) with a student in to the office to seek assistance
Classes are dismissed at 3.15. Classes line up in their designated area on the basketball court for dismissal. Your colleagues will be able to assist with these details.
At the end of the day please leave a brief summary of the work completed for the class teacher. Comments on the behaviour of individuals and/or the class may be useful. If you believe any incidents should be followed up, please speak to a senior teacher before leaving the school.
Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy. Please turn off all computers, heaters etc. and if any furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.
Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out.
We look forward to welcoming you to Deer Park North Primary School.
